EPR has considerable experience in the animal by-products sectors; this experience has been gained both with industries that use animal by-products and those who generate animal by-products including slaughterhouses, rendering plants, pet food plants, pharmaceutical plants, waste treatment facilities and food production facilities.
We have helped several rendering companies (covering all three categories of by-products) to make their environmental permit applications. Our close involvement in the consultation process for the Secretary of State’s Guidance Note and the BREF note for the sector is valuable in assessing options for Best Available Techniques.
We have also produced HACCP plans for clients seeking state vet approval under the animal by-products regulations. As with our other services our approach is to review the process fundamentals and use a risk-based technique to evaluate and prioritise areas for further work.
Regulatory compliance is a major issue for the animal by-products industry, especially compliance with odour conditions. EPR has helped several clients to develop strategies for achieving improved compliance. This has included reviews of management processes as well as assessments of a technical nature. Sometimes simply evaluating and addressing the scale of the problem can lead to immediate improvements. Using this approach we worked with one client and helped cut their odour complaints record from dozens per month to less than half a dozen per year.
